This kit is intended as a glue-on replacement solution to replace or repair the Velcro strip that runs up the B or C pillar and across the back of the crew cab HMMWV top.
The Velcro strip across the 4-man or 2-man top is how cargo covers, troop covers, soft slant backs and other bed covers are attached and kept water resistant.
Without this strip you cannot mount a bed cover.
Commonly the stitching tears out and is problematic to replace. Old, hardened tops cannot be restitched by a machine. Gluing addresses this and is effective if done carefully.
This kit contains a 10.5' long dual-sided Velcro clamshell strip, special glue, a spreader and a piece of chalk for marking. Starting at the center and moving to each side, the glue is spread on and the Velcro strip put down. It sounds easy because it is. ONLY this glue worked out of DOZENS tried.
The kit comes with two tubes of glue. This glue is VERY strong. In destructive test-to-failure testing the vinyl tears before the glue. This means a VERY strong join, as strong as stitching.
The old top must be very clean and scuffed with something like a Scotch-Brite pad to fully remove dirt and old paint. After glue is spread one one side and not too thick, the halves must be held firmly together for 5 minutes for the glue to set. By moving slowly and patiently, the strip can be glued on and then allowed to fully cure. Use remaining glue to stick down loose edges. If the curved portion of the top is lumpy, extra care must be taken to hold the pieces together while the glue sets.
